Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Eucalyptus essential oil is one of the most versatile and widely used oils in aromatherapy. Distilled from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree, it is prized for its fresh, camphoraceous scent and powerful therapeutic properties. It is a staple for respiratory support, pain relief, natural cleaning, and emotional clarity.
Eucalyptus Varieties
Not all eucalyptus oils are the same. The three most common varieties in aromatherapy each have distinct properties.
Eucalyptus globulus is the most common and widely available variety. It is the strongest of the three and best suited for adults. It is highly effective for respiratory congestion, colds, and flu. Note: the most common commercial versions are rectified (processed to remove certain compounds) and are not suitable for children.
Eucalyptus radiata is gentler than globulus and considered the best all-purpose eucalyptus for aromatherapy. It is excellent for respiratory support, immune function, and antiviral blends.
Eucalyptus smithii is the mildest variety and the only eucalyptus recommended for use with children and the elderly. It is effective for chest infections and facilitating breathing.
Benefits and Uses
Respiratory Support
Eucalyptus is one of the most effective essential oils for respiratory health. Diffuse to clear congestion, fight airborne germs, and support breathing during colds and flu. Add 3-5 drops to a bowl of steaming water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale deeply for 2-5 minutes. At the first sign of a stuffy nose, place 1 drop on the corner of your pillow.
Pain and Muscle Relief
An effective analgesic, eucalyptus is often used to relieve muscle, nerve, and joint pain. Blend with lavender in a carrier oil and massage into affected areas before and after a warm bath. For small areas, use 20-30 drops per 1 oz. carrier oil.
Cold and Flu Blend
4 drops eucalyptus (unrectified), 4 drops Scotch pine, 3 drops lemon. Add to a large bowl of steaming water and inhale, or use in a diffuser or vaporizer. For children and the elderly, substitute Eucalyptus smithii.
Natural Cleaning and Disinfecting
Eucalyptus has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties, making it an excellent addition to natural household cleaners. Add 10-15 drops to a spray bottle with water and white vinegar for an effective all-purpose surface spray.
Germ Fighter Spray
12 drops tea tree, 6 drops eucalyptus (unrectified), 6 drops lemon, 2 oz. distilled water. Combine in a spray bottle and shake gently before use. Effective on cuts, scrapes, and as a room spray.
Skin Care
Diluted eucalyptus can be used topically to support wound healing and address skin infections. Always dilute well in a carrier oil before applying to skin.
Safety Guidelines
Always dilute before applying to skin. Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use Eucalyptus globulus on children under 10. Use Eucalyptus smithii for children and the elderly. Do not use on babies younger than 2 months. Avoid during pregnancy without guidance from a qualified aromatherapist. Some individuals may experience sensitization. Perform a patch test before first use.
