My Top Ten Essential Oils and How I Use Them

My Top Ten Essential Oils & How I Use Them

These are the ten essential oils I reach for most, and exactly how I use them. If you're building your first collection or looking to simplify, this is a good place to start.

My Top Ten Essential Oils

1. Lavender

I keep this on hand for relaxation, sleep, and general first aid. One drop on a tissue tucked inside your pillowcase is all you need.

2. Eucalyptus

My personal favorite for cold and flu symptoms. I use this often during wildfire season when there is smoke in the air. It helps to disguise the smoke smell and open breathing passages.

3. Lemon

I use this a lot around the home. A few drops on a cotton ball or paper towel placed inside a stinky garbage can works wonders. A similar trick: a cotton ball inside the vacuum cleaner bag.

4. Orange

Orange is one of those universal scents. Citrus oils just brighten my day, and children love them too.

5. Tea Tree

A go-to for cuts, scrapes, and insect bites. Tip: use a cotton swab to dab a drop directly on those annoying bites.

6. Rosemary

I love a combination of Rosemary and Peppermint to stay alert and focused. Use it in the car anytime you need a quick boost. See the Memory Formula Spray recipe below.

7. Peppermint

Same as above, plus wonderful for headaches as it increases circulation. Useful in sports massage blends too. Be sure to dilute in a carrier oil and avoid the eyes. I don't recommend it in the bath as it can sting sensitive areas.

8. Frankincense

One of my favorites to use during meditation or a yoga practice. Frankincense has been used for thousands of years in spiritual and ceremonial traditions across cultures, from ancient Egypt to the Middle East, valued for its ability to quiet the mind and deepen breath. Its warm, resinous, slightly sweet aroma has a grounding quality that makes it easier to settle into stillness. I diffuse it before meditation, add it to a personal inhaler for yoga, or simply open the bottle and breathe it in when I need to slow down. It also blends beautifully with Lavender, Sandalwood, and Myrrh. If you're new to Frankincense, our Frankincense Super Blend is a wonderful place to start.

9. Helichrysum

My go-to for bruising. This oil has a remarkable reputation for supporting skin recovery from bruises, inflammation, and scars. Always dilute it in a good carrier oil, most often combined with Rosehip Seed oil for best results.

10. Four Thieves Blend

A blend of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary, developed according to the legend of the four thieves in 15th century England who used these and other aromatics to protect themselves while robbing plague victims. A fascinating history and a powerful blend.

Safe Use

Always dilute essential oils before applying to skin. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition, consult your healthcare provider before use. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
