Aromatherapy Tips
Using Essential Oils for Antiviral purposes

Essential oil research is validating many previously suspected properties of essential oils, as well as opening new doors for possible therapeutic action. And, essential oils are more widely used than ever before.

Studies have shown that certain essential oils can kill bacteria, and some have even been tested against influenza and other viruses. Plus, Lattin adds, they can be helpful in relieving cold and flu symptoms.

Taken from The National Center for Biotechnology Information
Herbs and the essential oils derived from them have been used from the beginning of human history for different purposes. Their beneficial properties have been applied to mask unpleasant odors, attract the attention of other people, add flavor and aroma properties to prepared dishes, perfumes, and cosmetics, etc. Herbs and essential oils (EOs) have also been used in medicine because of their biological properties, such as larvicidal action, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant, fungicide, and antitumor activities, and many more.

Many EOs exhibit antimicrobial properties, which is extremely important in fields of science and industry, such as medicine, agriculture, or cosmetology. Among the 250 EOs which are commercially available, about a dozen possess high antimicrobial potential. According to available papers and patents, EOs seem to be a potential alternative to synthetic compounds, especially because of the resistance that has been increasingly developed by pathogenic microorganisms.

In this review we summarize the latest research studies about the most-active EOs that are known and used because of their antimicrobial properties. Finally, it is noteworthy that the antimicrobial activities of EOs are not preeminent for all strains. Further investigations should, thus, focus on targeting EOs and microorganisms.

Here are 15 herbs and their essential oil form with powerful antiviral activity.

Follow the appropriate safety warnings as some essential oils are not safe for use on the skin as they can be irritating to the skin if they’re not diluted properly. They might be able to be used in a diffuser. Please consult a medical practitioner for any specific medical conditions you may have.

  • Oregano
  • Sage
  • Basil
  • Fennel
  • Eucalyptus (reduces fevers and fights viruses)
  • Lemon Balm
  • Peppermint (reduces coughs, sinusitis, and throat infections)
  • Rosemary
  • Red Thyme (has antibacterial activity to help fight respiratory infections)
  • Tea Tree
  • Cinnamon Leaf (Antimicrobial Activity of Cinnamon EO In numerous studies of antimicrobial activity, cinnamon EOs of various origins are used. EO of Cinnamomum zeylanicum displayed 100% inhibitory activity at 3.1 µL/mL concentration against influenza virus A1/Denver/1/57 (H1N1) with 30 min exposure.)
  • Bergamot
  • Geranium
  • Clove Bud (Research confirms that clove oil has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, has antiviral and antifungal properties to clean surfaces or air)
  • Patchouli (modulate immune response to influenza) Use 1 drop Tea Tree Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil inhibits influenza during the early stages by preventing intracellular processing of the viral particle. When introduced into cell culture media, tea tree oil prevented viral uncoating by interfering with the acidification of the endosomes and membrane fusion (Figure 2C, D) (Garozzo et al 2009, Garozzo et al 2011, Garozzo et al 2013, Li et al 2013). The ability to prevent endosome acidification was ascribed to the tea tree oil constituents terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol and terpinolene (Garozzo et al 2009, Garozzo et al 2011). These were tested against additional viruses, but their action may be IAV-specific. Tea tree oil, when actively diffused with a nebulizer for two seconds, cleared nearly all airborne IAV at 10 minutes, and showed zero virus at 15 minutes post nebulizer treatment (Usachev et al 2013).

Passive diffusion of Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) or blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) essential oils for 10 minutes, or Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) essential oil for 30 minutes, was enough to reduce influenza activity in cell culture diffuser or Aroma Lamp. They are happy yet calming scents that all children love.

A commercial germ blend containing cinnamon bark, clove bud (Syzygium aromaticum), sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), blue gum, and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) oils, effectively reduced influenza activity at multiple time points in cell culture (Table 5) (Wu et al 2010). This adds support for the practice of diffusing germ blends to sanitize rooms. Clove bud and cinnamon leaf oils are high in eugenol, which also showed extensive anti-influenza activity in mid-late stages of the influenza life cycle. Because cinnamon bark oil contains trans-cinnamaldehyde, an irritant and sensitizer, it is advisable not to use it in diffuser blends for an extended time period. However, diffusing for 30 minutes in an empty room, followed by airing out the room would be a reasonable practice. For the home user, an inhaler containing anti-influenza essential oils would be another option. Inhalers are great for on-the-go use, and eliminate the need to consider other people’s health conditions.

Essential oils that effectively inhibit both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococus (VRE) include tea tree, thyme, peppermint, lemongrass and geranium (Carson 1995, Doran 2009, Nelson 1997).

Essential oil use:Children respond very well to LOW Dosages of essential oils especially for anger and irritability. Use 1/3 the adult dose. When using essential oils with children, please remember their skin is very delicate.
